Own authority or leased to a carrier?

Your insurance needs are completely different depending on how you operate. We build the right package for your situation.

Own Authority

You haul under your own MC number

You are responsible for all your own insurance. The FMCSA requires primary liability at minimum — we build a complete package.

Primary liability — FMCSA required
Physical damage for your truck
Motor truck cargo — required by brokers
General liability for your business
MCS-90 endorsement filing included

Leased to a Carrier

You haul under a carrier’s authority

The carrier provides primary liability while you are under dispatch. But you need coverage for the gaps they do not cover.

Bobtail insurance — when not dispatched
Physical damage for your truck
Occupational accident insurance
Non-trucking liability coverage
Cargo coverage if carrier does not provide

Coverage built for owner operators.

Every piece of coverage an owner operator needs — explained simply.

Primary Liability

Required by the FMCSA for all trucks operating under their own authority. Covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to others. Minimum $750,000 for general freight.

FMCSA Required

Physical Damage

Covers repair or replacement of your truck if damaged in a collision, fire, theft, or weather. Your truck is your livelihood — protecting it is essential.

Strongly Recommended

Motor Truck Cargo

Covers the freight you are hauling. Required by most freight brokers at a minimum of $100,000. Without it, you cannot get loads from most brokers.

Broker Required

Bobtail Insurance

Covers your truck when driving without a trailer — between loads or after delivery. If leased to a carrier, their insurance does not cover you when you are not dispatched.

Leased Operators

Occupational Accident

If you are injured on the job as an independent owner operator, workers comp does not apply. Occupational accident insurance covers your medical bills and lost income.

Common questions.

What insurance do I need as an owner operator with my own authority?

At minimum, you need primary liability ($750,000 for general freight), physical damage for your truck, and motor truck cargo ($100,000 minimum for most brokers). We also recommend occupational accident insurance since you are not covered by workers comp as an independent operator.

I am leased to a carrier — do I still need my own insurance?

Yes. The carrier’s primary liability covers you while under dispatch, but not when you are driving bobtail between loads. You also need physical damage for your truck since the carrier’s policy does not cover your vehicle. Bobtail insurance and physical damage are essential for leased operators.

Can I get coverage if I just got my MC number?

Yes. We specialize in new authority programs. Many carriers are reluctant to insure new authorities but we work with those that do. We also help you with the MCS-90 endorsement filing required by the FMCSA to activate your authority.

What is occupational accident insurance and do I need it?

Occupational accident insurance is the owner operator’s substitute for workers compensation. Since you are self-employed, you are not covered by workers comp if you are injured on the job. Occupational accident covers your medical bills, disability income, and accidental death benefits — it is strongly recommended for all owner operators.

Do you handle owner operator insurance in Spanish?

Yes. Many of our owner operator clients are Spanish-speaking truckers operating throughout California and nationally. We handle your entire insurance program in Spanish — from the initial quote to claims assistance.
