Why cargo insurance matters.

Your truck insurance covers your vehicle — not the freight inside it. Cargo insurance is a separate policy that protects the goods you are paid to deliver.

01

Required by freight brokers
Most freight brokers require a minimum of $100,000 in cargo coverage before they will assign you loads. Without it, you cannot haul.
02

Your truck policy does not cover freight
Primary liability covers damage to others. Physical damage covers your truck. Neither covers the goods inside your trailer — that is cargo insurance.
03

Theft is a major risk
Cargo theft costs the trucking industry billions annually. A single load of electronics or pharmaceuticals can be worth more than your truck.
04

One claim can end your business
If uninsured cargo worth $80,000 is damaged or stolen, you are personally liable to the shipper. Cargo insurance prevents that from happening.

What cargo insurance covers.

Motor truck cargo insurance protects the freight you haul from the moment it is loaded until it is delivered.

Collision Damage

If your truck is involved in an accident and the cargo is damaged, cargo insurance covers the value of the lost or damaged freight.

Included

Theft

Covers the value of cargo stolen from your truck or trailer — whether at a truck stop, delivery location, or in transit.

Included

Fire & Weather Damage

Covers cargo damaged by fire, flooding, hail, or other weather events during transit.

Included

Loading & Unloading

Many policies extend coverage to include damage that occurs during the loading and unloading process — not just while the truck is moving.

Available

Refrigerated Cargo

Specialized coverage for temperature-sensitive loads. Covers spoilage if your refrigeration unit breaks down during transit.

Available

Debris Removal

If cargo spills on a highway, the cleanup costs can be enormous. Debris removal coverage handles the cost of clearing the roadway.

Common questions.

How much cargo coverage do I need?

Most freight brokers require a minimum of $100,000 in cargo coverage. However, we recommend matching your coverage limit to the highest value load you typically haul. If you regularly carry electronics or pharmaceuticals worth $200,000, your coverage should reflect that.

Does my primary liability cover my cargo?

No. Primary liability covers bodily injury and property damage to third parties. Physical damage covers your truck. Neither policy covers the freight you are hauling. Cargo insurance is a completely separate policy that specifically protects the goods in your trailer.

Are there cargo types that are hard to insure?

Yes. Hazardous materials, pharmaceuticals, tobacco, and high-value electronics can be harder to insure and may require specialty carriers. We work with carriers that specialize in these commodity types and can find coverage for most loads.

What happens if my refrigeration unit breaks down?

Standard cargo policies may not cover spoilage from mechanical breakdown. Refrigerated cargo endorsements specifically cover the loss of temperature-controlled loads if your reefer unit fails during transit. If you haul produce or frozen goods, this coverage is essential.

Can I get cargo coverage in Spanish?

Yes. Our team explains cargo policy details, exclusions, and claims procedures entirely in Spanish. Many of our trucking clients operate in Spanish and we make sure you fully understand what your policy covers before you sign.
